SAT Exam

The SAT exam is a 98-question, 134-minute college admissions test from College Board, scored 400 to 1600. You write two sections, Reading and Writing then Math, at an authorized test center on the Bluebook app. Families search “sat exam” when they first hear the name and want the whole map: what the letters mean, what is on the paper, what a 1200 or 1400 actually buys, how much it costs, and whether the score is useful if you might stay in India.

If you are a Class 11 or 12 student, or a parent booking the first Saturday, this page is that map. The pattern below is the one in force through the 2026-27 testing year, with the June 5, 2027 international date on the calendar. Country does not change the questions. Country does change fees, ID, and which universities will read the score.

What is the SAT exam full form?

SAT no longer expands to a phrase. College Board called it the Scholastic Aptitude Test from 1926, then the Scholastic Assessment Test in the early 1990s, then dropped the words. The letters are the name of the test. Institutes that still print “Scholastic Aptitude Test” on a brochure are copying a name College Board retired more than thirty years ago.

People in India still type “SAT exam full form” because the test is new in the household even when it is old in the United States. Treat SAT as SAT. The useful facts live in the pattern, the 400–1600 scale, and the list of universities that read it.

What does the SAT test you for?

The SAT checks reading, writing, and math skills that high-school courses already teach. Reading and Writing asks you to work short passages (about 25 to 150 words) and four-choice items: vocabulary in context, evidence, grammar, transitions, and purpose. Math asks Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry, with a graphing calculator, including Desmos inside Bluebook, open on every item.

College Board also reports a Science Practices and Foundations score on a 65–95 scale starting with spring 2027 administrations. That number is a second cut of items already on the form. It does not add a science section and it does not change the 1600. The SAT science score page covers what actually moves it.

The SAT does not ask you to memorize science facts, logarithms, inverse trig, or a separate essay. Subject Tests ended in 2021. There is no guessing penalty: a blank and a wrong answer score the same, so you should mark every item.

What is the SAT exam pattern?

The SAT you take in 2026 and through June 2027 has two sections, each split into two timed modules. Reading and Writing comes first: 54 questions in 64 minutes (two modules of 27 questions and 32 minutes). Math follows a 10-minute break: 44 questions in 70 minutes (two modules of 22 questions and 35 minutes). Testing time is 2 hours 14 minutes. Each section score runs 200 to 800. The total runs 400 to 1600.

SectionModulesQuestionsTimeScore
Reading and Writing2 × 32 min5464 min200–800
Math2 × 35 min4470 min200–800
Total4 modules98134 min + 10 min break400–1600

Each module also carries two unscored pretest items that later forms are built from. You cannot tell those items apart while you work.

The current SAT is multistage adaptive. Module 1 of each section is a mix of difficulties. How you do there routes you to a harder or easier Module 2. The scaled score draws on both modules and the difficulty of the second one. A strong Module 1 is how you keep the high end of the 200–800 scale open. Careless misses in the first 32 or 35 minutes cost more than they did on paper. The syllabus itself does not change between modules.

Math is about three-quarters multiple choice and about one-quarter student-produced response, where you type a number. A formula sheet covers area, volume, special triangles, and circles. You still take the exam in a room with a proctor. Digital here means Bluebook on a laptop or tablet at a center. You do not take the SAT from home.

How is the SAT scored?

College Board turns raw right answers into a scaled score. Each section is 200–800 in steps of 10. Add them for the 400–1600 total. Percentiles shift a little by graduating class; a 1200 has long landed near the middle of the college-bound distribution, while 1400 lands well into the top band. For a year-by-year reading of those bands, open What is a good SAT score.

Score reports also list a Reading and Writing score, a Math score, and, from spring 2027, the 65–95 science number. Colleges that ask for a test still read the 1600 first.

You get four free score reports if you list the colleges by nine days after the test. Extra reports cost $15 each. Score Choice lets you pick which test date to send. You cannot split sections across dates on the report you mail; the college that superscores does that math after it receives full dates.

A worked superscore: August Reading and Writing 680, Math 620 (total 1300). October Reading and Writing 650, Math 700 (total 1350). A college that superscores records 680 + 700 = 1380. A college that reads only the best single sitting records 1350. Check the admissions page of each school before you decide which dates to send.

Is a 900, 1200, or 1400 SAT score good?

A 900 is well below the college-ready middle. It can still be a starting diagnostic. It is a weak number to send to a selective campus that is test-optional, because the file will be compared with students who sent 1400s.

A 1200 is a solid mid-range score. Many regional US universities and several Indian private universities will read it as evidence you can handle first-year work. It rarely moves a Harvard, MIT, or similarly tight Indian-applicant pool.

A 1400 is a strong score in absolute terms. For Harvard specifically, 1400 is below the middle of the enrolled SAT range in years when Harvard publishes one. Indian applicants to the most selective US colleges usually want the 1500s to look typical inside that pool. A 1400 is a competitive number at a long list of very good universities, and it is a scholarship-range number at several Indian campuses. The question is never “is 1400 enough for Harvard.” The question is which list you are actually applying to.

What is on the SAT exam syllabus?

College Board splits the test into eight content domains: four in Reading and Writing (Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, Expression of Ideas) and four in Math (Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry). Domain shares and the official skill names live in the Assessment Framework.

The item-level list is tighter than a school course. We counted five Algebra topics, three Advanced Math topics, eight Problem-Solving topics, six Geometry topics, thirteen grammar rules, and six Reading miss types from the question bank, Bluebook forms, and Khan Academy. That map is on the SAT exam syllabus page and on MyCollegeBook’s curriculum page. Work that list. Broad textbook chapters that never appear on official stems can wait.

How much is the SAT exam fee?

College Board’s registration fee is $68. Students testing outside the United States also pay a $43 international fee, so the base international total is $111. Those figures run through June 2027 on the international fees page. India checkout then adds GST. The number on the payment screen is the one that matters; recent India checkouts have landed near $131.

ChargeAmountWhen it applies
SAT registration$68Every registration
International fee$43Test centers outside the US
Late registration$38After the regular deadline, before the late deadline
Change test center$34Same date, new center

Extra score report$15After the four free reports, or after the nine-day window
Test center fee$24Only at a short College Board list (Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan). Typical India centers do not add this.

US fee waivers cover low-income 11th- and 12th-graders in the United States or territories, and US citizens living abroad. They do not extend to most international residents. India has a separate path: the College Board India Scholars Program. Class XI or XII students who live in India can apply for a registration voucher, 90% off if annual family income is under ₹8 lakh, 50% off between ₹8 lakh and ₹15 lakh. Every eligible student who applies gets a voucher. Apply through the Buddy4Study College Board page linked from that program.

Who is eligible for the SAT exam?

College Board does not fix a minimum class, board percentage, or upper age. Students 13 and older can create an account and register themselves. Under 13 needs a parent or guardian through Account Creation Consent. Most testers are in Grade 11 or 12 because that is when college applications ask for a score.

There is no cap on attempts. You can take every Saturday administration you can book. The limit is calendar, money, and whether a later score will actually change a college’s reading of your file.

ID is the practical gate. The name on the College Board account, the admission ticket, and the physical photo ID must match. In India that ID is a valid passport or an Aadhaar PVC card (or the original hard-copy Aadhaar letter). Screenshots, e-Aadhaar, and photocopies leave people at the door. In the US, a driver’s license or school ID often works; confirm the current list for your country before you register.

How do you register for the SAT?

Create a College Board account at the SAT registration page. Use the name as it appears on the passport or Aadhaar you will carry. Upload a photo that meets the rules. Pick a date, search a center, and pay. If a date seems missing, finish the profile first; an incomplete account keeps administrations off the screen.

The device question during registration is a survey. You may take the test on a different approved device than the one you named, as long as Bluebook is installed on the machine you actually bring and you complete Exam Setup on that machine.

Exam Setup shows up in Bluebook about five days before the Saturday. You sign in, confirm details, download the test package, and print or save the admission ticket. Students who skip this step have been turned away at the door. Do it on the laptop or iPad you will carry, not on a sibling’s Chromebook “just to see.”

Personal Chromebooks cannot run Bluebook. School-managed Chromebooks can. Windows laptops and tablets, Mac laptops, and iPads are the usual personal devices. Android tablets are out. If you have no approved device, request a loaner from College Board at least 30 days ahead.

The India-specific click path, photo rules, and payment notes are on SAT registration in India.

When are the SAT exam dates?

International and US weekend calendars run the same Saturdays. Remaining 2026-27 dates include November 7, 2026 (regular registration October 23, late October 27), December 5, 2026, then March 6, May 1, and June 5, 2027. June is on the international calendar for this cycle.

Doors open at 7:45 a.m. local time. Scores typically go live about two weeks later. The live table, with the next deadline highlighted, is on SAT dates 2026-27. A later cycle page also exists for 2027-28 dates.

Pick the Saturday that leaves time for a retake before the application deadline you actually have. US Regular Decision in January wants a December score in hand. Many Indian private-university rounds run into the spring, so a March SAT can still reach those files.

How are SAT scores helpful?

A 400–1600 number is a common language. A CBSE 96%, an ISC 94%, and a 3.8 GPA from a US high school are hard to line up. A 1480 is the same 1480 in Delhi, Dubai, and Dallas. Admissions offices that read thousands of files lean on that.

The score also travels. One Saturday can feed US Common App files, Canadian and UK undergraduate routes that ask for SAT, a set of European programs, and a growing list of Indian private universities. You send the report; you do not rewrite the test for each country.

Scholarships are the other half. Many US universities publish merit grids keyed to SAT or ACT. In India, the India Scholars Program sets 1300 as the score floor for merit-cum-need awards at participating campuses, with full tuition possible when family income is under ₹8 lakh. Several Indian universities also run their own merit bands on SAT, separate from that program.

Test-optional US policies still leave room for a score. Optional means you may withhold it. For Indian applicants, the rest of the file is crowded: high boards, olympiads, similar essays. A 1500+ hands a reader a fast, comparable signal. A 1100 sent to a test-optional highly selective college usually hurts more than silence. Withhold a weak score. Send a strong one.

How do SAT scores help Indian students?

Open the official SAT acceptance in India chart. College Board lists dozens of Indian universities that read SAT for Indian residents, for foreign nationals, or both. Ashoka (code 7343), Krea (7632), FLAME (6784), Ahmedabad University (6760), Azim Premji (7588), Bennett, BML Munjal, Mahindra University, Manipal, Masters’ Union, and Shiv Nadar appear on that list, among others. Some accept SAT for every undergraduate program. Some accept it for B.Tech and skip it for other degrees, or the reverse. Ahmedabad University, for example, takes SAT for admission and skips it for B.Tech. Confirm the program, not only the university name.

Typical score bands we see in Indian private-university files, with the full table on SAT score cutoffs for Ashoka, Krea, FLAME, Plaksha:

UniversityScore band students actually bringWhat the number tends to do
Ashoka1450–1500+Strong admission file; 1500+ is often enough for a firm look
Krea1300–1400Competitive from 1300; 1400+ helps scholarship conversations
FLAME1200–1300Admission in this band is common; scholarships usually start at 1350+
Plaksha1350+Engineering-focused reading of the score
Shiv Nadar1300+Used across several programs
NMIMS1250–1350Program-dependent

Those bands are working ranges from recent cycles, not College Board cutoffs. Ashoka still runs its own aptitude test even if you send SAT; a high SAT can back the file, and you still write their assessment. FLAME will take SAT in place of FEAT for many applicants. Read this year’s admissions PDF before you skip a campus test.

The SAT does not replace JEE for IITs and NITs as a domestic student. BITS Pilani’s SAT route is for foreign nationals, not Indian-passport residents. IIIT Hyderabad’s SAT path is a DASA-style route for students who studied Grades 11 and 12 outside India. If those campuses are the plan, keep the Indian entrance tests on the calendar and treat SAT as a parallel file for the private universities and any foreign list.

NRI, OCI, and Gulf families get a second door: some institutes that close SAT to Indian residents still open it for foreign nationals. BITS and IIIT Hyderabad appear in that column on the College Board chart. Check residency rules, not only the score.

IIM Indore has run SAT on an international IPM path in recent cycles. The paperwork and the eligible passport categories change. Read the current IIM Indore SAT admission note before you hang a plan on one Saturday.

The practical India sequence is one test, several doors. A student aiming at US universities plus Ashoka plus FLAME takes the SAT once, sends the four free reports, and still writes the campus assessments that remain required. The score is the portable piece. Boards, essays, and interviews stay local.

How do you take the SAT exam in India?

India runs the same eight-Saturday international calendar at authorized centers in the large metros and a long tail of smaller cities. Search the live list when you register; seats in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai go first. The city-by-city notes are on SAT test centers in India.

Bring a fully charged approved device with Bluebook and Exam Setup already done, the admission ticket, and the physical passport or Aadhaar PVC. Pack the charger. Centers have power, and machines still die. Scratch paper comes from the proctor. A watch without an alarm is fine; your phone is not. The test-day checklist is the packing list.

Reading and Writing is first, then the break, then Math. Eyes fatigue in that order. Eat in the 10 minutes. Students who skip food then leak Math points they already knew.

How is the SAT different from the ACT and the PSAT?

College Board and ACT are both accepted by most US colleges. The SAT is shorter (2 hours 14 minutes versus about 2 hours 55 minutes for ACT), fully digital in Bluebook, and pairs each short reading passage with one question. ACT reading still runs long passages with many questions. SAT Math has Desmos built in. ACT Science is a separate optional section and no longer feeds the ACT Composite.

PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 cover the same domains as the SAT at easier difficulty. PSAT does not send a college score. National Merit is a US scholarship program tied to PSAT/NMSQT. The side-by-side is on PSAT vs SAT.

If you already have a strong SAT, you rarely add ACT as well unless a specific college asks. If you are in Grade 10, PSAT is practice for the same skills, with a lower ceiling.

Where can you find SAT exam sample questions and practice?

Start inside Bluebook. College Board’s full-length adaptive tests are the only practice that copies Module 1 routing and the on-screen tools. The walkthrough is the Bluebook practice test guide. Paper PDFs exist for students who will test with a paper accommodation; they are linear, so they train content more than routing.

Khan Academy is the licensed free partner. MyCollegeBook scores official-style work and is the practice surface we run in class. For Math method, open How to improve SAT Math and the Math cheat sheet. For words in context, grab the 250 SAT vocab list.

Third-party books (Barron’s, Princeton Review) write extra-hard items that wander off the official skill list. They train patience. They do not train recognition of the stems you will see on Saturday. Stay in official items except when you want a stamina session, and even then, label those hours as stamina.

A “SAT exam sample,” “SAT exam questions,” “SAT exam PDF,” or “SAT exam paper” search will drop you into outdated paper SAT files and unofficial PDFs. If the header still says 65 minutes for Math or 52 Reading questions, you are looking at the old test. Use Bluebook and the current syllabus page.

What should you bring on SAT test day?

Pack the device, charger, admission ticket, and physical ID the night before. Add pencils or pens for scratch work, a College Board username and password you can type, and an approved calculator if you prefer a handheld to Desmos. Epinephrine auto-injectors are allowed in a clear bag. Leave the phone, smartwatch, notes, and extra screens at home.

Complete Exam Setup 1–5 days out so the ticket exists. Print it. Emailing yourself a copy is a backup; a paper ticket still clears a login stall at the door.

How many times can you take the SAT?

As often as there are dates you can book. Two or three sittings is the usual plan: one diagnostic-to-real in Grade 11, one targeted retake, one safety date before applications close. Superscoring rewards a Math jump on one Saturday and a Reading jump on another, at colleges that superscore. A fourth sitting rarely moves a file unless a section is still far from the target.

Cancel a registration if you are sick; a bad score you send can still remain on an all-scores campus. Check each college’s score-use policy before you assume Score Choice will hide a date.

What should you do this week?

If you have not registered and you want November 7, 2026, the regular deadline is October 23. Create the College Board account, match the ID name, and pick a center with open seats. Download Bluebook the same day and take one full-length test so the app is boring by Exam Setup week.

If you are already registered, attempt one Bluebook Math module and one Reading and Writing module. Tag every miss with a domain name from the syllabus page. Spend the week on the two skills that created the most misses. Practice those items on MyCollegeBook.

If you want a teacher on those misses, book a trial class below. If you want a self-paced video path through the same list, the SAT online course is built on official items.
