Spring 2027 SAT Science Score: What is changing on the SAT?

Starting with the March, May, and June 2027 SAT, and with spring SAT School Day, your score report includes a science score from 65 to 95. The test in front of you is the same SAT: Reading and Writing, Math, about two hours, total 400 to 1600. College Board calls the new number Science Practices and Foundations. It is counted from questions already inside those two sections.
Your school sees that number. Colleges admit you on the 1600. A good SAT score is still that total. A 90 in science does not add points to your total, and a 65 does not take points off.
Key takeaways
- Nothing changes in how you prepare. Same two sections, same questions. You do not memorize biology, chemistry, or physics for this score.
- The science score counts questions you already answer. Math with a science story is still math: isolating a quantity, linear, quadratic, and exponential models, unit conversion, proportions, and data analysis. About half the Reading and Writing passages are already science. Writing on those passages is still grammar, transitions, and rhetorical synthesis.
- The question gives you the science. Every fact you need is in the passage or the stem. Being a strong reader helps you on these items the same way it helps you on the rest of Reading and Writing.
- The 1600 is the score that matters. The science score sits beside it on a 65–95 scale. It is for your school. Send colleges your total, your Reading and Writing score, and your Math score.

What is the SAT science score?
It is a second score from the same test, on a scale that runs from 65 to 95. 65 is the bottom. 95 is the top. 80 is the middle. Read 78 as a point on that scale. It is not 78 percent, and it is not a grade in chemistry class.
You will see it if you test on 6 March, 1 May, or 5 June 2027, or in the spring School Day window (1 March through 30 April 2027). A fall 2026 SAT exam does not include it. The PSAT does not include it.
The last time the SAT printed a science number, it was called Analysis in Science and ran from 10 to 40. The digital SAT stopped printing it. Spring 2027 brings that kind of score back, on the new scale, from the same kind of questions: science passages, plus math set in a science situation. If you take the state SAT in Kentucky, you already get a science score on a 50–70 scale, counted from those same questions. The one-hour Biology, Chemistry, and Physics subject tests ended in 2021. Those were separate content exams, scored 200 to 800.
How is the science score calculated?
Nobody hands you a separate science section. After you finish, the scoring pulls out the questions that carry a science load and turns them into the 65–95. Three groups.
Which math questions count?
This is the group that moves the science score, and you still solve it as math.
- Isolating a quantity in a formula.
- Word problems with a real-world linear, quadratic, or exponential model.
- Unit conversion, usually by dimensional analysis, and proportions. The story is often a lab, a rate, or a measurement.
- Data analysis: reading a study, a sample, a line of best fit, a percent, a ratio.
- Geometry wearing a science noun. A recent form described a chemical compound as a tetrahedron and then asked a geometry question. The compound is scenery. The solid is the work.
Try one. A gas sample follows PV = 12, and P = 2.5. What is V? Divide. V = 12 / 2.5 = 4.8. The word “gas” never enters the arithmetic. If you can isolate a variable, read a model, convert a unit, and set up a proportion, you can do the science-flavored math on this test.
Which reading questions count?
About half the passages in Reading and Writing are already science: a short study, a result, a graph, two researchers who disagree. That mix is already on the test you can practice today. Spring 2027 does not add a new stack of science passages so that a science score can exist.
On a science passage you do what you do on any passage. Find the claim. Check the evidence. Read the graph against the sentence, not against what you remember from class. The item gives you the hypothesis, the method, and the result. A student who reads a lot handles the density faster. That advantage shows up in Reading and Writing already, and it shows up again in the science score because those passages are counted twice: once in your 200–800, and again in the 65–95.
Which writing questions count?
A science paragraph does not become a science question because the topic is a cell or a planet. Transitions, rhetorical synthesis, and the shape of the argument are the writing skills that sit on those passages. You are choosing the sentence that states the finding, or the transition that matches the logic, or the phrase that keeps the tone.
Grammar still matters for your Reading and Writing score. Subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and boundaries are how you pick up points in Standard English Conventions, including when the paragraph happens to be about an experiment. Drill the rules. The topic of the paragraph will not save a comma splice.
What should you study?
Study the SAT you were already going to study.
For Math, put your hours on isolating a quantity, linear and exponential models, quadratics when they show up as a real situation, unit conversion, proportions, and data analysis. The work is the same as any other plan to raise your SAT Math score. When the stem mentions a compound, an organism, or a planet, cross out the scenery and write the equation.
For Reading, practice science passages inside ordinary Reading and Writing sets. One claim, one piece of evidence, one graph. Do not pause to recall the unit from biology.
For Writing, drill grammar rules, transitions, and rhetorical synthesis. A lab report is still a paragraph.
Leave the AP Biology review book on the shelf if you bought it for this score. AP science is its own exam. Facts from that course do not unlock SAT items, because the item already contains the facts.
How does this compare with the ACT?
The ACT still offers a separate Science section: 40 questions, 40 minutes, scored from 1 to 36. Since September 2025 that section does not go into your ACT composite. The composite is English, Math, and Reading. If you add Science, you also get a STEM score, the average of Math and Science.
You do not sit that extra 40 minutes on the SAT. The SAT science score is included when you take the regular test.
Take ACT Science when a college on your list asks for it. Pomona wants it if you send an ACT score. Georgetown recommends it if you plan to study science. Most colleges do not require it, and a low Science score cannot pull your composite down. If your list does not ask, spend those 40 minutes on the three sections that make the composite.
What you should do this week
Take one timed Math module in Bluebook and mark every item with a science story. Solve it as math, then check whether the story changed a single step. It should not have. Then do one Reading and Writing module and treat the science passages like every other passage: claim, evidence, sentence structure.
Track your Reading and Writing score and your Math score. Those two still add up to the number you send.
