What's changing in AP Statistics in 2026-27?
This school year, College Board is using a new course framework for AP Statistics: five units, statistical practices, and a learning objective on investigating a statistical question. The first exam on this description is May 2027.
For 2026-27, AP Statistics is a five-unit course. Algebra 1 is enough as a prerequisite. College Board removed analyzing departures from linearity, combining random variables, the geometric distribution, chi-square goodness of fit, and inference for slopes. The May 2027 exam is fully digital: 42 multiple-choice questions with four answer choices, and four free-response questions worth 10 points each.
What is changing in AP Statistics in 2026-27?
The official description is now five units, GAISE-style practices, and investigative questions. The removed topics and the May 2027 exam shape are below.

When do the AP Statistics revisions take effect?
The revised AP Statistics course is for the 2026-27 school year. The exam is May 2027: four free-response questions and 42 multiple-choice items.
Why did College Board revise AP Statistics?
AP Statistics was revised to line up with current introductory college statistics courses.
The practices and skills now follow the statistical problem-solving process in the American Statistical Association’s GAISE recommendations. A student who has finished first-year algebra can take the course.
Was the Algebra 2 prerequisite removed from AP Statistics?
Yes. College Board removed the second-year algebra prerequisite. AP Statistics is an option for a secondary student who has successfully completed a first-year algebra course.
College Board’s bar is first-year algebra. If linear equations are still shaky, fix that first. Younger students still building that base usually start in SAT and PSAT readiness rather than a full AP Statistics year.
What happened to the old nine AP Statistics units?
The old Course and Exam Description was nine units. That is the unit guide teachers used through 2025-26:

The five new units are: (1) Exploring One-Variable Data and Collecting Data, (2) Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions, (3) Inference for Categorical Data: Proportions, (4) Inference for Quantitative Data: Means, (5) Regression Analysis.
College Board also deleted these topics, with the old codes:
- Analyzing departures from linearity (2.9)
- Combining random variables (4.9)
- The geometric distribution (4.12)
- Chi-square goodness of fit (8.2 and 8.3)
- Unit 9: Inference for Quantitative Data: Slopes
If a review book still treats geometric random variables or slope inference as required AP Statistics content, skip those chapters for May 2027.
What new topics were added to AP Statistics?
College Board added investigative questions, including determining an investigative question within a statistical study.

How many units does revised AP Statistics have?
Five units. College Board’s stated reason is more time on each topic.

Is the May 2027 AP Statistics exam fully digital?
Beginning in May 2027, the AP Statistics exam is fully digital. All student responses go through the Bluebook testing app.
Students still get scratch paper and a printed reference booklet (the same reference is also in Bluebook). College Board’s revisions page is the source for that switch.
How many multiple-choice questions are on the new AP Statistics exam?
42 questions. Four answer choices per question. College Board also added two multiple-choice sets of three questions each.
One set focuses on probability, random variables, and probability distributions. The other focuses on regression analysis. Practice those as sets that share a stem.
How many free-response questions are on the new AP Statistics exam?
Four free-response questions, 10 points each, 90 minutes, all in Bluebook.
Six questions, 90 minutes. Questions 1–5 were the shorter writes (College Board suggested about 65 minutes for those). Question 6 was the Investigative Task, about 25 minutes. Each of those six was scored 0–4 on the rubric. May 2027 uses four longer 10-point questions and drops the separate Investigative Task slot. Practice typing the answers.
What do the four AP Statistics FRQs test?
College Board describes the four FRQs this way:
- One FRQ on Practice 1: Formulate Questions and Practice 2: Collect Data
- One FRQ on Practice 3: Analyze Data and Practice 4: Interpret Results
- One FRQ on inference skills associated with Practices 2, 3, and 4
- One FRQ on Practices 2, 3, and 4 and multiple content areas
Can students still use a graphing calculator on AP Statistics?
Yes. Students may use an approved handheld graphing calculator in addition to the Desmos calculator built into Bluebook.
Scratch paper is still provided for planning and calculations. College Board is updating the Bluebook symbols menu with common statistical symbols, and says free-response questions will minimize the need for symbolic entry. Do a full digital practice before May 2027.
Do AP Statistics teachers need a new Course Audit?
Yes. All new and returning AP Statistics teachers need to complete the 2026-27 AP Course Audit to keep AP Classroom. The 2026-27 Course Audit is open through 31 January 2027.
One new practice exam is already in AP Classroom. College Board says it will update other AP Classroom resources through the 2026-27 school year. Textbooks published in the last 10 years still cover the revised material, per College Board.
Will colleges still give credit for AP Statistics?
College Board consulted universities during the revision and included faculty on the advisory board. It expects current credit and placement policies to hold, and says the rewrite may create room to broaden them.
Check the credit table at the college the student is applying to. The 1–5 scale is the same. A 5 is Extremely well qualified. A 4 is Well qualified.
Do current AP Statistics textbooks still work?
Yes. College Board says textbooks published in the last 10 years will adequately address the revised course material.
Keep the book and change the syllabus. Drop geometric distributions, goodness of fit, slope inference, combining random variables, and departures from linearity. Add investigative questions. If the class is still pacing nine units in April, it is behind the 2026-27 framework.
How should students prepare for AP Statistics in 2026-27?
Train the five-unit course, the 42-question multiple-choice section (including the two three-question sets), and four 10-point digital FRQs. Skip the retired topics.
