What are AP physics classes?
AP physics classes are instruction for the four College Board AP Physics exams.

The College Board has administered Advanced Placement since 1955. AP Physics is four courses. AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 are algebra-based. AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism are calculus-based. AP Physics 1 is first-semester algebra-based college physics, including fluids after the 2024-25 revision. AP Physics 2 is second-semester algebra-based physics: thermodynamics, electricity, optics, and modern physics.
AP Physics C: Mechanics is calculus-based Newtonian mechanics. AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is calculus-based electromagnetism, usually taken after Mechanics. A prior high school physics course is not required for Physics 1 or for C: Mechanics. Concurrent calculus is recommended for both C exams.
Which AP physics classes does SATPrepIn teach?
SATPrepIn AP physics classes cover all four current College Board AP Physics exams. AP Physics B ended after 2014.
| College Board exam | Mathematics | SATPrepIn hours |
|---|---|---|
| AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based | Algebra / geometry | 20 to 35 |
| AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based | Algebra; precalculus concurrent | 20 to 35 |
| AP Physics C: Mechanics | Calculus concurrent or complete | 20 to 35 |
| AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism | Calculus concurrent or complete | 20 to 35 |

How do SATPrepIn AP physics classes work?
SATPrepIn AP physics classes are live online sessions. An AP physics tutor works from the current Course and Examination Description for that exam. Class time is used on College Board MCQs and FRQs from past years. The four free-response types in the current physics exams are mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design and analysis, and qualitative/quantitative translation.
- Live online, scheduled in the student time zone, including US hours and other regions.
- 20 to 35 hours of instruction per course.
- One-to-one by default. Small-batch AP physics classes are also available.
- Past College Board multiple-choice and free-response items as the practice set.
A trial class is the first step. Use the form on this page. Organization background is on About. SAT prep is a different product: 1-on-1 SAT classes or SAT online batch.
What is the difference between AP Physics 1, 2, and C?
AP Physics 1 is the algebra-based first-semester mechanics course, including fluids. AP Physics 2 is the algebra-based second-semester survey (thermodynamics, E and M, optics, modern physics). AP Physics C: Mechanics is the calculus-based mechanics course. AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is the calculus-based E and M course. Engineering and physical-science applicants usually take the C sequence. Life-science and pre-medical applicants often take Physics 1, then Physics 2.
| If the student is | Usual exam |
|---|---|
| First physics course, algebra-based | AP Physics 1 |
| Second semester after Physics 1 | AP Physics 2 |
| Mechanics with calculus | AP Physics C: Mechanics |
| E and M with calculus, after Mechanics | AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism |
Students who still need functions before C can start with AP calculus classes or SAT/PSAT readiness.
What is the AP Physics exam format?
All four AP Physics exams use the same clock. Each exam is 180 minutes: 85 minutes for 42 multiple-choice questions (40 scored) and 95 minutes for 4 free-response questions. Calculators are permitted on all parts. AP Physics C exams were 90 minutes before this revision and are no longer sat back-to-back in one short window.
| Section | Items | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple-choice | 42 (40 scored) | 85 minutes |
| Free-response | 4 | 95 minutes |
The SATPrepIn class uses released College Board MCQs and FRQs under the current CED. School laboratory hours required by College Board for an audited high school AP course are a school responsibility.
What AP Physics scores do SATPrepIn students record?
SATPrepIn AP physics classes have a record of scores of 4 and 5 on AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics, and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism.
College Board scores AP exams on a 1 to 5 scale. 5 is Extremely well qualified. 4 is Well qualified. 3 is Qualified. Among the four physics exams, AP Physics 1 has historically posted the lowest share of scores 3 or higher (45.6 percent at 3 or above in the 2023 public tables on Advanced Placement). Physics C exams post higher 3-or-above shares, in part because the cohort is self-selected and calculus-prepared.
Most colleges that grant credit require a 3 or a 4. Physics C credit is accepted by more engineering faculties than Physics 1 credit. Check the college policy.
Who should take SATPrepIn AP physics classes?
These classes are for high school students who will sit one of the four AP Physics exams. Typical students are in a US-curriculum school, an international school sitting AP as an external exam, or a student adding AP next to IB, A-Levels, or a national board. An AP tutor is assigned after the trial.
Students in India
AP exams in India are given at College Board-authorized schools and centers. Registration is through the school AP coordinator or an authorized center. College Board lists the 2026-27 exam fee for schools outside the US, US territories, Canada, and DoDEA as $129 per exam. Confirm the current table on AP Exam Fees. SAT instruction for India-based students is described on SAT coaching in India.
